Excerpt:

“Look, Luke, if I break my rule about being picked up can you promise not to dismember me on our first date or worse yet, bore me?”

Pushing the door open, Luke casually shrugged a shoulder. “Anabel, I never make promises I can’t keep. You may prove irritating.”

I blinked in disbelief. By the time I recovered to retort, I was talking to the screen door. Stunned, I realized Luke really had left. After a moment of taking this in, I started laughing in rare enjoyment. Our first date could prove very interesting indeed.

Pretty When You Cry

by Skye Warren

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GENRE: Dark Romance
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

BLURB:

I came from a place of dirt floors and holy scriptures. They told me the world outside is full of sin, and the first night I escape, I know it’s true. Ivan saves me, but he does more than that. He takes me. He makes me his own girl.

My conditioning runs too deep. Ivan sees what I am.

That’s the thing about showing a mouse to a cat. He wants to play. And it’s terrifying, even for me. Because the only thing darker than my past is his.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MediaKit_BookCover_PrettyWhenYouCry
Excerpt:
The bed is the largest one I’ve ever seen, but somehow too small for two people. Too small if one of the people is Ivan. He’s physically large and, more than that, terrifying. What will he do to me? I can’t fight him. God, I’m not sure I want to try. Home.
In the end I push back the heavy blankets, almost as thick as my sleeping pallet in Harmony Hills, and climb onto the bed. The pillow is perfectly soft, so clean, and I let myself drift away. I’m floating on a cloud, plush and high up.
I dream in those moments. I dream about color and light. I dream about the sky.
There is a deep voice from above and all around me, telling me to get on my knees. Commanding me to pray. This is the first time in my life I’ve ever skipped bedtime prayers. The first time I haven’t begged for salvation. I’m not going to beg, not ever again.
The hand on my face doesn’t feel angry. It isn’t a slap for my insolence. It strokes down my temple and cups my cheek. My eyes flutter open. Ivan.
His hand falls away.
“Candace,” he says in the same deep voice of my dream.
And there’s a look in his eyes, the same look Leader Allen gives Mama. The same look he started giving me. That look is the reason Mama sent me away.
“You’ll stay here,” he says softly. “I don’t want you to dance, but you can stay.”
The allure of it beats through me, a heart of its own, thumping away to a dream that isn’t mine. Safety. Home. I want those things, but I want freedom more. I want the flash of lights and of skin. I want the power those women had onstage.
Ivan wants to put me in a cage, but what I really want is to fly.
“Okay,” I lie, because one sin becomes many. Leader Allen taught me that, and he was right. I’ll convince Ivan, though. One day I’ll dance on that stage, and Ivan will watch me.
One day he’ll teach me everything there is to know.
“Good girl.”
The praise washes over me, undeserved and darkly pleasurable, a stroke along my spine. It feels good, but I know what it is. A trap. A chain around my ankle to keep me on the ground. In this moment, it locks me so tight that I’d accept anything he did to me. If he were to touch me the way the woman with the kind eyes meant. The way Leader Allen touches Mama during prayer.
Ivan leans down, and I hold my breath. Large hands take hold of the blanket, lift slightly. I feel everything between us—anticipation and denial, lust and fear corded together. We feel them together, breathe them in through the air, pulse them with each beat of our hearts. It’s a kind of knowledge, this feeling, connecting a thousand nerve points to the core of my body. This is what he meant by teaching me. This and so much more.
Then he pulls the blanket higher, tucking it around me. “Good night,” he says, eyes glittering in the dark.
He is silver and light, made even brighter by the shadows behind him. It’s strange, the disappointment I feel that he isn’t going to touch me. He isn’t going to teach me. Not tonight. “Good night,” I whisper back.
Then he’s gone, shutting the door against the dark, locking me in. And I slide away into sleep, without dreams, without color, with only the shameless black of contentedness, knowing I am safe for the night.
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
BLURB:
Bethany Waterbury left Hollywood and the shadow of her mother’s death to give herself a fresh start. Her main intention—to connect with the family she’d never really had the chance to know.
Author Kent Black is enjoying his chart-topping success and living freely wherever his travels take him. But when he meets the illustrious Bethany Waterbury his wanderlust subsides and the thought of a steady future begins to take over.
Kent believes in happily ever after, but the burden of Bethany’s past might be too much for him to embrace —unless true love is more powerful than a Hollywood tragedy.
EXCERPT:
Coffee houses once were a source of inspiration. They had a vibe and a feel to them. Now, Kent thought, they were more like bars.
The same people walked in and out of the door every day. They ordered the same addictive concoction and either carried it out or sat for hours and chatted with others.
He missed the days where he could pull up to a table and no one bothered him for hours. Since he was traveling it was one of his only options. Sure, he could hold up in his hotel room, but that wasn’t very inspirational either. Even though he’d rather be alone, he needed to surround himself with people for inspiration—he just wished they weren’t so noisy.
The door opened again. It had become habit to look up and study the person. This one had him sitting up, removing his fingers from the keyboard of his laptop and following her with his eyes.
Long red curls bounced over her shoulders, which were bare in a sundress with yellow flowers. She was lean and toned and absolutely radiant. She walked to the end of the line and Kent turned in his chair to follow her with his gaze.
Smiling at the boy behind the counter, Kent noted that the young man flushed at her simple gesture. That said something.
She continued on to pay for her drink. He heard the woman ringing up her order offer a pastry to which the redhead waved off with her hand and a laugh. Obviously she’d avoid that, he knew just by looking at her. Her drink was probably low-fat blah too.
When she turned the beauty of her hit Kent right in the chest. He’d never seen such a beautiful specimen.
DOS ANGELES
by Michael O’Hara
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

GENRE:

Mystery

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Dos Angeles, the first in a franchise of mysteries featuring Paco Moran, puts the multicultural thirty-something ex-LAPD homicide detective turned reluctant private eye on the trail of a beautiful young Latina on the run with ten million dollars in cash. Half Anglo and half Mexican, Moran is a transitional character equally at home working in Beverly Hills or blue collar Boyle Heights, the tough East Los Angeles neighborhood where he was raised by a single mom. In his debut case Paco quickly learns he will be the fall guy if he doesn’t track down the young immigrant who allegedly stole a small fortune from a sleazy Hollywood producer secretly laundering money for a notorious drug cartel. Paco’s frantic search takes him on a roller-coaster ride through a shadowy place he calls Dos Angeles a city within the city and a virtual country unto itself.
EXCERPT:
Dante Pirelli thought the timing could not have been better to get out of town and spend a week in Maui at the oceanfront condo he owned on Kaanapali Beach. For days all the local media could talk about was the potentially record-breaking heat about to hit Southern California. Temperatures in downtown Los Angeles were expected to soar above a hundred, and out on the western edge of the San Fernando Valley where Pirelli lived it would probably be ten to fifteen degrees hotter.
An added benefit was that Vyna, his beautiful young trophy wife, was excited about getting away, too. That meant there could be lots of sex on the holiday agenda. Vyna had been suffering with a bad case of the blues lately, but when she was in a good mood she could be a real tiger in bed.
Just as the stretch limousine arrived that would take him and his family to the airport, Pirelli gave a final briefing to Maria Rojas, the young woman he was leaving behind in charge of his sprawling, Tuscan-style estate.
“Remember, always keep ice in the dog’s bowl. And make sure you’re here for the gardeners and pool man. Any problems with anything you got the numbers to call.”
“Yes, sir,” Maria nodded with a nervous smile. Although confident, she could handle everything expected of her she was anxious about being left alone in such a big, fancy house. Still, she was going to be paid double her normal salary and Mr. Pirelli had said she could use any of the home’s resort-like amenities, including an amazing circular pool with a cascading waterfall and thirty-foot water slide.
Six days into her stay Maria’s only real challenge had been coping with the boredom. Outside of taking care of Mrs. Pirelli’s needy French Pug and dealing with the regularly scheduled service people, there had been very little to do. As predicted, the scorching weather the Spanish press was calling Los Días de Infierno had arrived with a vengeance. It was so hot during the day she rarely went outside, and she soon got tired of watching non-stop telenovelas. All the idle time made her realize how much she missed her regular routine at Mr. Pirelli’s film company. She liked how busy it always was and how the hours just seemed to fly by. Work—like prayer—kept her from worrying about her recent troubles.
Emmy nominee Michael O’Hara– who has written and produced some of the highest-rated television movies and miniseries in recent memory – is adding author to his resume with the August, 2015 the publication of his first novel, Dos Angeles.
The book, featuring a bilingual and bicultural private eye named Paco Moran, centers around Moran’s desperate search for a beautiful young Latina immigrant who stole ten million dollars from the mob. In a pre-publication review American Book Award winner Peter Quinn said: Paco Moran’s debut in Michael O’Hara’s Dos Angeles is fast-paced, finely crafted, and full of surprises. It’s noir fiction for the 21st century, a helluva ride from the first page to last. Here’s hoping O’Hara brings Paco back very soon. I can’t wait!
A former award-winning journalist and NBC Vice President of Media Relations, O’Hara made an auspicious debut as a writer/producer with “Those She Left Behind,” a critically acclaimed family drama that continues to be the highest-rated TV movie (25.1/38 share) on any network in over twenty years. It starred Gary Cole and Colleen Dewhurst (who won an Emmy Award for her performance). That success was followed by the widely praised NBC movie “She Said No” which won an American Women in Radio & Television Award for Best Television Dramatic Special.
O’Hara next wrote and executive produced “Switched at Birth,” the blockbuster NBC miniseries that earned an Emmy nomination as Best Dramatic Special and remains the highest rated (22 rating/33 share) miniseries on network television since its initial telecast over two decades ago. He was also the writer and executive producer of “Murder in the Heartland,” a celebrated ABC miniseries which garnered a Casting Society of America Award and two Emmy nominations. Right after that he created and executive produced the first of 22 “Moment of Truth” movies for NBC, establishing one of the most successful film franchises in TV history.
O’Hara also wrote “She Woke Up Pregnant,” the pilot for ABC’s ‘Crimes of Passion’ franchise. It scored an impressive 13.4 rating and 21 share, making it the highest-rated ABC movie of the year. He went on to write “One Hot Summer Night,” another ‘Crimes of Passion’ thriller that was ABC’s highest-rated Thursday night movie of the season. Other producing credits include two CBS projects: “Twilight Zone – Rod Serling’s Lost Classics” and “A Child’s Wish,” which was filmed in the Oval Office and featured a cameo appearance by then President Bill Clinton. In addition he wrote and executive produced NBC’s “In His Life: The John Lennon Story” and “1st to Die,” a two-part NBC miniseries based on the best-selling novel by James Patterson.
Overall O’Hara has produced four miniseries and 33 Movies of the Week. MediaKit_BookCover_LostCauses
EXCERPT:
The magic hissed in fear and anger. For a moment it considered attacking, but there wasn’t enough water left to drown her.
Also, it was Sera. I didn’t hurt Sera.
I stumbled backwards as reason slammed into me. I wrenched the threads of magic toward me. They twisted in my core, displeased, but at least I controlled them. It had so nearly been the other way around.
Sera’s movements were hesitant, as if she approached a wild beast, but her eyes were as determined as ever.
“I’m back,” I said. My face was red and my heart pounded like I’d just sprinted a mile, but I’d come back. This time, at least, I’d come back.
Sera studied my face for a long, silent moment. She returned the syringe to the black case and tucked that into one of the kitchenette’s drawers.
Carmichael and Vivian watched me as they would a stranger. A stranger who might try to eat their liver with fava beans and a nice Chianti.
“Really, it’s me. So long as I’m not using the magic, I’m still Aidan. I didn’t slide any further down the sanity slope.”
They looked unconvinced.
“We can’t just use the drug every time.” I attempted logic. “It knocks me out for days, and we can’t afford that.”
“I’m all for knocking you out, but we don’t have enough left to do it whenever you’re an idiot.” That might have been Sera agreeing with me.
I gave her a shaky smile. She slapped my face.
“Hey!” It only stung a little, but allowing her to slap me whenever she thought I was stupid wasn’t a precedent I wanted to set.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

MediaKit_BookCover_UnderTheCovers
EXCERPT:

This excerpt is after Elle has run into her ex and George is worried about her. Elle is fighting her attraction for him because she doesn’t trust her taste in men.

George didn’t comment and didn’t move. She’d reached out to him for the first time. Her hand was soft and warm. It was delicate – but it was strong. He covered her hand with his own,

caressed it. He wanted her to know he was there for her, that he wasn’t a threat, that he would never treat her the way Dean had treated her.

Her lips parted, but she didn’t pull away.

He took her hand in his, rubbed her palm with his thumb. “You’re a strong woman.”

“I don’t feel like it.” Her voice was a little breathless and she was watching him warily, uncertain.

“You’ve raised a great kid in such difficult circumstances. I’d say that’s strong.” He let go of her hand and shuffled a little closer. She didn’t back away. “If you need help, I’m here for you.”

Elle stood then, scowling. She stalked away and then turned back to him. “Why? I don’t understand why you would possibly want to help me. I’m a mess. What’s in it for you?” She put her hands on her hips.

George raised his eyebrows, but stayed seated and replied, “I want to get to know you better. You’re a beautiful, intriguing woman.”

Elle screwed up her nose. “But I’ve told you I’m not interested. I don’t want a relationship; I don’t want a fling.”

“And yet I just can’t keep away.” He realized how ridiculous it must sound to her. “How about we agree to be friends?”

“Friends?”

“Yes, friends. You know, people who hang out together, go to the movies, call each other to chat about their day? Friends.”

Excerpt:

See, everything new became old. Everything special became ordinary. I’d love to blame him for my betrayals, but mirrors are all too honest. And there was no way around it. I made this choice.

But even so, it is hard to fathom happiness, evaporating like a water droplet on a blistering hot day. And that’s what happened. Our spark was gone, our flame had dulled.

And there it was. I had a wonderfully honest and kind husband, I had two amazing children, I was a partner at my law firm, and in a single fall moment I risked it all.

Topic question from Amanda Kimberley: Some writers are planners, some pantsers. Which one are you? Do you follow this plan for every book or do you find yourself waffling towards the other side for some of your books?
I am definitely a combination of both. I do quite a bit of planning mentally when I am writing. There is structure evolving before I get to a scene. However, I don’t like to plan too far ahead. I enjoy flying by my pants with my projects. So I will know my final GPS point for my story. I will know my beginning. As I roll through the story that is where a lot of last minute planning occurs. Some chapters I will have thought out well in advance. Others will evolve with the evolution of my story. I give room for characters to spontaneously arrive and leave. In many ways, I plan one step ahead while giving my mind the freedom to develop new and interesting develops just a step beyond what I know.
I do follow this way of writing for the majority of my stories. I will have a beginning and end with major plot points in mind. Then I will just go with it and let the story play out. I’ve found that it is a process that yields better results for me than trying to drill out a treatment to death. As I said, I do constantly plan a step or two ahead of where I am at. I always seem to know where I am going. Thank God! Ha.
I will say this for my process. I hold quite a bit of story in my head. I am able to really lay things out clearly to the point where my conscious mind really works well with my subconscious. If they weren’t able to function in that way, I wouldn’t be anywhere near as effective.
I also work on screenplays (move and TV). I pretty much use the same program. This is why it is difficult for me to collaborate at times on projects. My mind has always processed stories faster than my friends. I also need the freedom to create along the way which makes some people nervous. They like a detailed roadmap. For me, that roadmap can be too detailed at times and suppress vital spontaneous thought.

Before I hand the proverbial blog mic over, I wanted to offer my readers a little bit about my first writings AND why I’m SO thrilled to have Clarence here!

Poetry was the first friend I was introduced to in writing. I remember spending hours with a pen and paper, just stream writing to get to know poetry. It was during those times that I became very intimate with it, and now, I deem it my first love. So clearly, you can see why I’m very excited to have Clarence Barbee on my blog today! He is treating us with a guest post. Today he discusses the story behind the story of “Chicken Soup and a Shot of Jack”.

Amanda Kimberly LB—The story behind the story, “Chicken Soup and a Shot of Jack”

In 2011, I was living in Omaha, Nebraska, and desperate. I had family problems, financial issues, job instability, and my girl friend at the time thought I was suicidal. I had been writing and performing spoken word poetry for over ten years, but somehow I hit a block with it. I didn’t want anything to do with poetry, or writing, or Omaha; I just had to get away.

I sold what I could, packed up my clothes, some books, CD’s, mementos, and threw them in the trunk of my Buick. Now mind you, I didn’t have a valid license, my car was fifteen years old with a speedometer that didn’t work, and my goal was to make it to the Pacific Ocean, and figure it out. With my final checks from my jobs working as a paraprofessional and security tech for an online financial company, I headed west with a little over $1000 in my bank account. I landed in Aurora Colorado refreshed and feeling freer than ever.

I knew I would need some money, so with my new found feelings, I hit up a couple of open mics with some CD’s I had recorded in hopes I could sell some for gas money. Well, that didn’t pan out so well; I ended up running through my money, and sort of became homeless. However I didn’t give up, I fell in love with Denver, and thought I am going to make it here by any means.

I was able to find a shelter, and a job as a sign spinner, but my car at this point had given all it had. It was in bad shape, and the money I was getting as a sign spinner was pennies—and not the pretty kind. I had applied to a treatment center to work with some very at-risk youth. Low and behold they hired me; till this day I have no idea why, but they did. My car ended up dying, and the shelter I was living at was about 13 miles away. I was able to take the bus there, but getting back I would need to take a cab. The first night I called a cab, I told the cabbie my story and he offered me the spare room he and his wife had in their home. I had made it.

In 2014, I stopped drinking, and began writing a lot of short stories and essays. I had a renewed sense of faith, I got my own apartment, and I began to think. I thought about all the people who helped me. I thought about all the young girls at the center I’d helped, and the resiliency of the human spirit. So I started taking some time, and writing essays about my experiences. I had always hoped that one day I would write a book,

The essays that are contained in the book are the stuff that life is made of.

Excerpt:

They never taught us anything about why the Mayans believed there would be no life after 2012; they just said they were wrong. They never taught us about why the Muslims hate America, they just said the Muslims were terrorist, and they were responsible for 9/11. What is a Jihad, and does it have anything to do with The Crusade? Did Jesus make the crusades happen because Christians are truly violent people? They never taught us what the Pope does, or why the Dali Lama is named after an animal.

Stealing Second
by Alison Packard

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Katherine Whitton doesn’t purposely avoid men and relationships, but she doesn’t mind that side effect of immersing herself in her job with the San Francisco Blaze. Years ago she was betrayed by her one true love, and she’s never fully recovered, though she’s tried by building a new life in a city she loves.
It’s taken seventeen years for Tom Morgan to get over Katie—Katherine now. Sober now and faced with the incredible opportunity to manage the Blaze, he thinks he’ll finally be able to handle working with this beautiful woman without falling to pieces…as long as she doesn’t get too close.
A crisis with the team’s star pitcher forces Tom and Katherine to put in long hours together. Years of animosity melt away as the sexual tension between them ignites. But it’ll take more than scorching kisses to avoid the wreckage of the past. And neither Tom nor Katie are sure they’re ready to trust each other or risk their hearts for a second chance at happiness.
Excerpt:
Striding through the locker room portion of the clubhouse, Katherine ignored the players in various stages of undress and made her way down the long hallway that led to the staff offices. When she reached the last office on the right, she crossed the threshold, found the edge of the door with her palm and with the force of her ire, slammed it shut.
A perverse sense of satisfaction filled her as Tom Morgan visibly flinched and jerked his head up from the open laptop sitting on his scarred oak desk. In the space of a few seconds, his blue-green eyes went from startled to annoyed. No surprise there; it wasn’t like she hadn’t been on the receiving end of that particular reaction before.
“You always did know how to make an entrance.” His lazy drawl still held a hint of Texas and never failed to heighten her pulse. A fact that irritated her beyond measure. “What’s got your thong in a twist this time?”
“Rick Taylor.” Katherine moved forward but didn’t sit down in the chair opposite his desk. She didn’t plan on staying long. And how did he know she wore a thong anyway? “Why am I the last one to know he’s thinking about resuming his baseball career?”
Tom leaned back in his leather chair, a ghost of a smile hovering on his lips. “I doubt you’re the last person to know, and I only found out two days ago.”
“Why didn’t you call me immediately? If Rick is trying to make a comeback, my department needs to be involved.”
“It isn’t my place to call you. It’s Doug’s.” His enigmatic eyes briefly skimmed over her body, then lifted. There was no indication whether he liked what he saw. Not that it mattered. Not anymore. “Besides, aren’t you the one who said you preferred I didn’t contact you after hours?”
“When it comes to anything media-related, I’m on call 24/7. You know that.”
Tom shrugged, drawing her attention to his broad shoulders. The Blaze T-shirt he wore didn’t do much to disguise his muscular upper body. Although he didn’t play anymore, he was still in excellent shape. Of course, he wouldn’t be one of those ex-athletes who let themselves go after their playing days were over. He was still a perfect specimen. Not that she spent a lot of time thinking about him or his body.
Liar.
Okay, fine. Maybe she thought about his body once in a while. But only because it was an involuntary response.
“I assumed Doug would call you as soon as he got off the phone with me. Rick hasn’t made it official. There’s not much we can do until he does.”
Katherine gave him a grudging nod. He was right, but she didn’t have to like it. By all accounts, patience had never been one of her virtues. Starting from the moment she’d arrived into the world—three weeks premature. “I understand that. But I need to be kept abreast of the situation. I assume if he does intend to come back, he’s going to one of our minor league affiliates?”
“At the moment, that’s hard to predict,” Tom said. “We have no idea what his fitness level is. He’s basically missed two full seasons. If he’s in top shape and his skills haven’t diminished, he could be considered for one of the non-roster invitee slots at spring training with the Blaze. If not, he’ll start out in the minors. At what level would depend on him.”
“I’d appreciate it if you’d keep me in the loop. Due to the circumstances, this is going to be a big story. I’d like some advance warning so I can prep my staff and make sure we keep the media circus as far away from him as possible.”
“Anything for you…Katie.”
“Don’t call me that,” she snapped, annoyed that he seemed incapable of using her given name whenever they were alone together.
“Sorry.” The grin that played at the corners of his mouth indicated he wasn’t sorry at all. “Force of habit.”
She narrowed her eyes and gave him her best glacial stare. Not that it would do any good. As always, Tom would do as he damn well pleased. “Break the habit.”
