Before I hand the proverbial blog mic over, I wanted to offer my readers a little bit about my first writings AND why I’m SO thrilled to have Clarence here!

Poetry was the first friend I was introduced to in writing. I remember spending hours with a pen and paper, just stream writing to get to know poetry. It was during those times that I became very intimate with it, and now, I deem it my first love. So clearly, you can see why I’m very excited to have Clarence Barbee on my blog today! He is treating us with a guest post. Today he discusses the story behind the story of “Chicken Soup and a Shot of Jack”.

Amanda Kimberly LB—The story behind the story, “Chicken Soup and a Shot of Jack”

In 2011, I was living in Omaha, Nebraska, and desperate. I had family problems, financial issues, job instability, and my girl friend at the time thought I was suicidal. I had been writing and performing spoken word poetry for over ten years, but somehow I hit a block with it. I didn’t want anything to do with poetry, or writing, or Omaha; I just had to get away.

I sold what I could, packed up my clothes, some books, CD’s, mementos, and threw them in the trunk of my Buick. Now mind you, I didn’t have a valid license, my car was fifteen years old with a speedometer that didn’t work, and my goal was to make it to the Pacific Ocean, and figure it out. With my final checks from my jobs working as a paraprofessional and security tech for an online financial company, I headed west with a little over $1000 in my bank account. I landed in Aurora Colorado refreshed and feeling freer than ever.

I knew I would need some money, so with my new found feelings, I hit up a couple of open mics with some CD’s I had recorded in hopes I could sell some for gas money. Well, that didn’t pan out so well; I ended up running through my money, and sort of became homeless. However I didn’t give up, I fell in love with Denver, and thought I am going to make it here by any means.

I was able to find a shelter, and a job as a sign spinner, but my car at this point had given all it had. It was in bad shape, and the money I was getting as a sign spinner was pennies—and not the pretty kind. I had applied to a treatment center to work with some very at-risk youth. Low and behold they hired me; till this day I have no idea why, but they did. My car ended up dying, and the shelter I was living at was about 13 miles away. I was able to take the bus there, but getting back I would need to take a cab. The first night I called a cab, I told the cabbie my story and he offered me the spare room he and his wife had in their home. I had made it.

In 2014, I stopped drinking, and began writing a lot of short stories and essays. I had a renewed sense of faith, I got my own apartment, and I began to think. I thought about all the people who helped me. I thought about all the young girls at the center I’d helped, and the resiliency of the human spirit. So I started taking some time, and writing essays about my experiences. I had always hoped that one day I would write a book,

Excerpt:

They never taught us anything about why the Mayans believed there would be no life after 2012; they just said they were wrong. They never taught us about why the Muslims hate America, they just said the Muslims were terrorist, and they were responsible for 9/11. What is a Jihad, and does it have anything to do with The Crusade? Did Jesus make the crusades happen because Christians are truly violent people? They never taught us what the Pope does, or why the Dali Lama is named after an animal.

“I want you to be comfortable, sweetness. You have a look on your face as if you’re expecting me to crush you. That’s not an ideal mindset to instigate your desire.” He rolled to a sitting position, leaned against the couch, and patted his thigh.

Excerpt:

“Here, sit on my lap. We’ll just hold each other for a bit.”

Muscles melting in relief, Keely threw her leg over his and settled onto his lap.

He caressed her arm and spoke softly. “Ready?”

She nodded and glanced over to Baruch. He was trying to focus his eyes.

Keely jumped when Makar’s hands landed on her hips.

“Relax. You’re in charge. Okay?”

She stared into his golden eyes and tried to figure out why she was so damn jumpy. Releasing her breath, she placed her hands on his shoulders and leaned forward. “I’m going to kiss you. Will you do that electrical charge thing again? I need some warning.”

“No, sweets. That was a one-time deal. Lay it on me.”

Moving closer, she felt his palms slide up her back. The moment their mouths touched, she closed her eyes and fell into the most sublime experience imaginable. His lips were soft, his motions gentle, and his tongue warm and inviting. Gradually, she grew bolder and demanded more from the kiss, withdrawing, nipping his full lower lip, and kissing the sting away before starting the intimate exploration all over again. His palms pressed harder against her back, pulling her closer.

Coming up for air, she sighed when her breasts smashed against his chest and he nibbled along her neck. A slight tug on her earlobe sent tingles shooting across her skin. His sensuously accented words had her wiggling on his lap.

“That’s it, sweetness. I smell a slight aroma of violets. Let go, baby. Give us more. Umm, yes. Keep moving your hips. Yes, just like that. Ride me. Ah, you’re making me so hard, Keely.”

Battle Cry

Book #2 in the Loki’s Wolves series

by Melissa Snark

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Survival demands sacrifice. Healing requires forgiveness.
After losing her lover and then her mate, Victoria Storm builds a new life in Sierra Pines, California. When the Norse Fates predict the she-wolf will destroy the world to save her unborn child, her duties as Freya’s priestess conflict with her responsibilities as Odin’s Valkyrie.
Sawyer Barrett has hunted Victoria so passionately, he doesn’t know whether he loves or hates her. Desperate to end the fighting, he will take chances with everything—except his heart. This hunter harbors a deadly secret he can’t reveal without risking the tentative ceasefire and his father’s continued disapproval.
Men revere him; monsters fear him. Jake Barrett—the notorious Hunter King—values loyalty to family above all else. When he believes his eldest son was murdered by a wolf ally, he releases a chain reaction of violent destruction that claims the lives of both wolves and hunters.
An ancient vampire plots the destruction of wolves and hunters alike. If the embittered rivalry doesn’t end quickly, there is no hope for the Hunters, Victoria’s pack, or the mortal world.
Excerpt:
There stands an ash called Yggdrasil,
A mighty tree showered in hail.
Thence come the dews that fall in the vales.
It stands evergreen ‘bove Urd’s Well.
From there come women, very wise,
Three from the lake that stands ‘neath the pole.
One is called Urðr, another Verðandi,
Skuld the third; they carve into the tree,
Each child’s life and destiny.
~Völuspá or “The Insight of the Seeress”, Poetic Edda
Urd’s Well at the roots of the World Tree
The white wolf ran along the trunk of the great ash tree. Her claws dug into the silvery bark while she descended toward the bottom of the Nine Worlds. Thick gnarled roots radiated from the tree’s immense base and then grew thinner. Just beyond, the dark waters of the Well of Urd formed a vast lake spread outward into eternity.
There, destiny awaited: her future and her unborn child’s.
Upon reaching the sandy soil, Victoria shifted from her wolf to her human form and walked naked to join the women gathered about the shallow shore. The Norns, the Sisters Wyrd, personified Fate. One a maiden, one mature, the last a crone: Verðandi, Skuld, and Urðr.
At the lakeshore of the Well, the three sisters filled crude wooden bowls with water that nurtured the tree. The youngest sister, the beautiful maiden Verðandi who personified the Present, smiled in greeting. “You visit us again, Victoria Storm.”
“As you predicted I would.” Victoria spoke with deference. She sought guidance from the Norns and needed to curry their favor.
Skuld, an imposing woman in her middle years and the Future incarnation, labored in ominous silence beside her older sister, Urðr, a gnarled old woman and the Past aspect of Fate.
Without a word, wizened Urðr thrust the bowl she gripped in her bony fingers into Victoria’s hands. The vessel, hewn from weathered gray wood, had shallow sides and a broad, flat bottom. Securing a firm hold, Victoria stepped into the lake and grimaced when the frigid cold bit into her flesh. She placed the lip of the bowl to the water and then filled the container to the brim.
Old Urðr said, “The man you loved has died.”
Victoria winced. “Yes.”
Verðandi’s tone softened. “His soul is tormented.”
Victoria’s foot snagged on a stone, and she stumbled. Water sloshed over the brim and doused her hands. She lost half the contents of the container before she recovered her balance. Her throat worked in a convulsive swallow. “No, you’re mistaken. I was there when he died. I saw Daniel’s soul cross over.”
“I am not mistaken,” Verðandi said with genuine sorrow. The youngest Norn stepped away.
Mouth open, Victoria rushed after her, determined to demand the Present Fate provide her with a satisfactory explanation, but the old woman got in her way.
Urðr’s lips pulled thin over cracked and yellowed teeth, an expression more grimace than grin. “Your mate has also died, as have so many others. You leave a trail of death in your wake.”
“Also true.” Fuming with frustration, Victoria followed the Norns to the base of the tree. She walked slowly, placing each step with precision, taking care not to spill another drop.
The three sisters each took a turn watering the roots of the tree. Verðandi acted first, followed by the silent Skuld, and finally Urðr. The eldest persisted in taunting Victoria. “Your love and your mate were not the same man.”
Scowling, Victoria bent and poured water on a root until her bowl was empty.
“The past is the past. There is nothing I can do to alter it,” she said with determined pragmatism. “I’ve come to see you because I am pregnant.”
Youthful Verðandi clicked her tongue against the roof of her mouth. “You doubt yourself. You drown in sorrow and anger.”
Ancient Urðr cackled.
“True enough.” Victoria bobbed her head once. Her temper roiled beneath ironclad self-control. She had no patience for delays, no use for games. She wanted answers.
Shadows enshrouded Skuld, and her voice manifested upon the air, thick and oppressive, closing in from all sides. “Your daughter will not grow to adulthood in Midgard.”
Victoria’s heart slammed against her breastbone. Her breath expelled in a horrified gust. The bowl dropped from her hands which flew to protect her abdomen. “What do you mean?”
“Your daughter will be taken from you on the eve of her third birthday,” Skuld said. “The one you trust most, a member of your own pack, will give the child over to your greatest enemy.”
A growl trembled in Victoria’s throat, and her entire body shook under the dual assault of fear and rage. The suggestion of betrayal from within her own pack filled her with disbelief to the core of her being. It was unthinkable. Gritting her teeth, she sought a solution, refusing to dwell on it. “How am I to prevent this?”
“We speak of what will come to pass,” Verðandi said in a sympathetic tone.
“Your predictions are not carved in stone,” Victoria said. Arguing with Fate was a foolish endeavor, but she refused to accept their prophecy.
The old woman, Urðr, smiled with a frightening gleam in her eyes. “Predictions, carved into the trunk of the World Tree, carved into the spiritual fabric of the world.”
Stubborn determination settled over Victoria like armor. Her mother had taught her there was no absolute fate, just as there was no absolute free will. Life consisted of a wide range of possibilities between the two extremes. She refused to allow her daughter to die at three years of age. She would move worlds, alter fate, slay gods.
Whatever it took.
“Do you wish to save your child?” Skuld asked.
Victoria answered without thought. “Yes. I’ll do anything. Tell me. Please.”
“The final days are upon us,” Verðandi said.
Skuld took over speaking. “To save your daughter, you will side with Loki against the Aesir. You will use your enchanted dagger to cut the binding of the great wolf Fenrir. You will be responsible for freeing the beast that kills Odin.”
Victoria’s stomach turned. Her head shook in automatic denial. “When the gods imprisoned Fenrir, my people pledged fealty to the Aesir. We have served them loyally ever since. Even when we were driven from the homeland, almost a millennium ago, we remained faithful. I will never cut Fenrir’s bonds. To do so would end the world we live in and doom us all.”
Skuld’s gaze held steady. “You will.”
Victoria snarled her denial. “No. I will never become the servant of the Trickster or willingly take part in bringing about Odin’s death.”
Skuld turned her head and pinned Victoria with one black eye that rolled in its socket like a liquid marble. “To save your daughter, you will.”
My Review:
I received this book from the author via Goddess Fish Promotions in exchange for an honest review. I have read a lot of Melissa Snark’s work over the years, but all of that work cannot compare to Battle Cry. This is by far, her best work yet that blends fantasy, Norse legend, and the paranormal. All of her work is really good, but I like Battle Cry the best!
Melissa is an exceptional storyteller. Her imagery is so descriptive that I find it complete poetry. The book had me hooked right from page one because it is action-packed. I loved all three distinct stories in the book and wanted to know what would happen to all the characters that it was very hard to put down.
There are many people out there that shy away from reading books out of sequence in a series because they are afraid that they will not be able to follow the story as well, but I can assure you that this book can be read as a stand alone because there is plenty of back story woven in brilliantly throughout the story that you will not feel lost. I honestly needed the back story because I hadn’t read “Hunger Moon” Book One in quite some time. I truly believe that it will not hinder you reading this series out of sequence or reading the series by taking a long break between books.
This book is five stars!
Excerpt:
The house was large. Actually–more than large. A mansion with dozens of rooms upstairs and many more on the ground floor. I took the long way, thinking I would give a light tap on Jillie’s door, just in case she was in and maybe had company keeping her occupied. There was a staircase, just past Jillie’s room, down to the kitchen. More for the use of the household staff, but Jillie didn’t have anyone who lived in so it was only used when the help came on their usual days.
Sucker punched. The odor. Undeniable. Unmistakable.
Knowing it wouldn’t make a difference, I prayed to the gods for a break. There wasn’t a chance it was anyone but Jillie, but for once, I found that small molecule of hope glowing in my heart. Hesitating, just for that moment, I gathered my strength.
The master suite was down a short hallway opposite the dining room. The hallway narrowed and lengthened. A scream inside my head ordered my legs to move. Great, now Master Sergeant Craven was in my head. I forced myself forward.
I knew what to do at a crime scene. I’d been an MP for the last four years and had seen more than I wanted to.
My stomach rolled and pitched.
Excerpt:
Her heart pounding, Bianca Lucchesi smiled at the man she’d come to see while doing her best to ignore the one she’d never wanted to see again. Antonio Legato. She’d arranged to meet her uncle at the bank instead of at his home because she’d hoped to avoid Antonio. And here he was anyway.
Dio mio, would her heart never slow down? One glimpse of him had been enough to bring everything back. Everything she’d tried so damn hard to suppress. To forget.
She widened her smile. “Zio Enrico,” she said as her uncle came around the desk and embraced her, kissing her on both cheeks. Marriage had agreed with her godfather. He was still lean, still handsome as sin, with that black hair and those chocolate eyes. He looked happy again—not stricken, the way he’d been at the funerals for her father and her brother Fedele.
“Prego,” he said, motioning to the chair beside Antonio. “I don’t believe you’ve met my capo di società, Antonio Legato.”
Would Antonio say something about their past? She stuck out her hand and tried to appear mildly interested. Anything but infuriated. Or hurt. “Don Legato,” she said.
Antonio rose and took her hand in his large one. Cristo, he’d grown. He was a man now—at least six feet, with the broad shoulders and slim hips of a male in his prime.
His blue eyes met hers, a shock of unruly blond hair falling just over them. A wave of heat rolled through her. How many nights had she dreamed of him? How many times had she relived those moments they’d spent together?
He flashed her a casual smile, as if he were completely unaffected by her, and pressed a kiss to her knuckles, the light brush of his lips reminding her of other places he’d kissed.
“Signorina Lucchesi. It’s a pleasure. I haven’t seen you since secondary school.”
“I wasn’t aware you knew each other,” Enrico said.
“We had a class together,” Antonio said. “Chemistry, I believe.”
Bianca wanted to kick him in the shin. Was he trying to flirt with her? Chemistry! Yes, they’d had it. But outside of class.
“You’re mistaken, signore. It was biology, not chemistry.”
“My error.” He was still grinning at her—the arrogant bastard. Did he think she still wanted him? Well, if he did, he was wrong.
Antonio released her hand, and they retook their seats. Bianca’s skin tingled where he had touched her, and she resisted the urge to press her hand to her mouth, to feel that tingling against her lips.
Damn him. Antonio Legato was a hundred different kinds of infuriating.
And he knew it.
Excerpt Four:
Sexting Texas
“Got ‘em.” Jangling her keys at him to show her success, Texas pulled open the screen door. It took her a moment to get the key in the lock, but she managed and the tumblers clicked. She turned to thank him. “Goodni—”
He stood close, too close, his big frame crowding her space. She glanced up at his face, but it was too dark to make out his expression. The hand at her waist pushed her against the door. His head lowered. Warm breath teased her lips, and the slight scent of beer tickled her nose.
“Will?” She barely got the question out before his lips brushed hers softly, lightly. Her tummy took a little tumble. Then his mouth opened over hers, his tongue moving in slow to skim hers, and the little tumble turned into a high-rise free fall.
A low groan rumbled in his throat. His other hand palmed the back of her head as his hips ground into hers. She arched against him, aching for the hand on her ribs to venture farther up, aching for his muscular thigh to slide between her legs.
His tongue eased from her mouth, and his lips were gone, along with the weight of his body. The last to leave were his hands as he stepped back and adjusted the hat cocked to one side of his head. He cleared his throat. “Sorry.”
She wasn’t. Like the kiss they’d shared fourteen years ago, this one was a total surprise. And like that kiss, it rocked her world. She hadn’t even thought about stopping him, not for a second. Wished he’d do it again. “Too much alcohol.”
“Yeah, and talk of sex.”
“Huh? Oh, yeah.” Definitely.
He backed up to the edge of the porch. “See you Monday night.”
“Monday?” God, she sounded like a moron. What was it they said about alcohol and brain cells?
“Town meeting, remember?”
Texas groaned. Maybe she’d get drunk again Monday night so she’d have an excuse not to go. “I hate those things.”
“Me, too.” Will pivoted on the ball of one boot and took the steps two at a time. “Night.”
“Night.” Texas watched him for a second, that sauntering walk unmistakable, then sighed and let herself in the house. She shut the door, leaned against it, and traced her lips with fingers that shook. No doubt about it, William Charles Sanderson had kissed her for the second time in her life. And once again he’d apologized.
Reviews:
“The suspense keeps the pages moving quickly in book two of the Blood and Honor series. There are numerous characters, but Delamar does a wonderful job of incorporating them so that readers keep abreast of the story. A fast pace, credible characters and a complex plot guarantee hours of entertainment.” — RT Book Reviews, 4 stars
“Retribution was great… oh so damn great. So this is the second book in the Blood and Honor series and I loved it even better than the first one…. Another wonderful story filled with action, love, forgiveness, and some awfully hot steamy scenes! This story was beautifully written and I hope you pick it up and read it!” — Reading on the Wild Side blog, 4.5 stars
“You are kept on the edge of your seat until the very last page, just like at the end of “Revenge”, “Retribution” has a teaser for the next novel that makes me excited to read the next novel. If you liked “Revenge” you will love “Retribution”; this is easily a stand alone novel; I’m just glad that there is more to come in this series.” — Steph’s Book Retreat blog, 4.5 stars
Excerpt:
Nick turned the music up and caught Delfina’s eye. Was it just his imagination, or had she been admiring his bare arse? “Watching me, were you?” he asked, keeping his voice pitched low.
She blushed, roses staining her cheeks. His chest felt lighter than it had in weeks. “I’m not answering that.”
He strode over to her and leaned in, forcing her to sprawl back on the bed, caged within his arms. He placed his lips near her ear. “Your blush told me everything. Every single naughty thought you were having.”
“Madonna,” she muttered and braced her hands against his chest. “You’re getting a swollen head.”
He darted his tongue out and ran it along the edge of her ear. “Most certainly.” He put a knee up on the bed and rubbed his hard length along her thigh.
She laughed and pushed against him, but he didn’t budge. “Time to get undressed,” he whispered. Her hands went to the buttons that ran down the front of the silk blouse tucked into her skirt. She played with the top one.
“Now?” she asked, her voice lilting and playful.
“Now.” He rumbled the word in her ear and she shivered. “Take it off. I want to see you. All of you.”
10 things that Dana Delamar loves!
1. Chai tea, especially Starbucks’ Oprah chai. Yum!
2. David Gandy, who’s pretty much my idea of physical perfection (and he’s a nice guy too!). He inspired Enrico Lucchesi, the hero of REVENGE, Book 1 in my Blood and Honor series. Don’t know who David Gandy is? Here’s his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/OfficialDavidGandy
3. The TV show “Supernatural.” I am obsessed! (And I’m a total Dean girl.)
4. Larissa Ione’s Demonica/Lords of Deliverance series. She writes the most awesome, sexy heroes, and her world-building is amazing!
5. Reading! I have an overstuffed Kindle, two huge bookcases, and an Amazon wishlist that’s a mile long!
6. Writing. I love, love, love it. It’s the best job in the world. (Also sometimes the most maddening.)
7. Music. Some of my favorite bands are Adele, Chris Isaak, Amy Winehouse, Franz Ferdinand, Duran Duran, INXS, Echo and the Bunnymen… can you tell I’m a child of the 80’s?
8. Traveling. I have a goal of hitting all the continents before I die. So far I’ve been to North America, South America, Europe, and Africa. Hopefully, Australia will be next!
9. Movies! I’m especially partial to anything with Chris Hemsworth in it. :)
10. My family, and especially my hubby, who’s my real-life romance-novel hero!
Shifter Under Cover, the 3rd story of Pepper Valley Shifters
C.A. Tibbitts
Paranormal Romance with suspense
Synopsis
Forrest Scott has worked too long and too hard as an undercover operative for the D.E.A. Shifter Division to get stuck with a mission partner straight out of training. When his new partner turns out to be the one shifter woman he’s been asking on dates repeatedly for years, he can’t help but imagine the possibilities.
Adeline Lahey may be new to the undercover job, but she’s had plenty of experience turning down his advances. She does everything she can think of to turn him off, yet sparks still fly. While their chemistry is palpable, even Forrest Scott can’t be trusted with her heart.
When Forrest is forced to split his time between two missions, a third undercover operative takes over as Addie’s full time mission partner.
Will their undercover mission bring Forrest and Addie closer, or will the addition of a third operative drive Forrest and Addie apart?
ShifterUnderCoverSmall
Excerpt
Forrest nibbled at her upper lip and she opened her mouth, his tongue swept inside and her nails dug into his suit as she clung to him. Her brain stopped working and all she knew was his tongue curling around hers. She moaned and he pulled her back upright, then she yelped as she was in the air.
“Forrest!” She wrapped her arms around his neck and held on for dear life. She’d never been carried before, and it kind of hurt where her weight rested on his arms. How was he lifting her? “Our guests,” she finally muttered, trying to blink the romantic haze from her eyes.
“They left a while ago.” He was carrying her to the bedroom.
“Forrest, I-” he silenced her as his mouth found hers again. The bed was at her back and he was over her, tasting, tempting, drawing her further into his promises of pleasure. Before she knew it, she’d unbuttoned his suit jacket and pushed it off his shoulders. He shrugged out of it, his lips never leaving hers. She wrenched at his tie and started on his shirt buttons.
Forrest yanked at the tie, managing to undo the knot. She was undressing him, and he knew if he stopped kissing her, she would protest. Besides, now that he’d had a taste of her, he did not know how to stop. Her hands splayed across his bare chest, and he slid his hands under her back, pressing those full breasts against him. He broke away first, needing to breathe for a short moment, but kept his hold on her. Her eyes were closed and he pressed kisses along her jaw, down her neck, and further still, his tongue grazing where her dress barely contained her breasts. “Addie, my Addie,” he murmured, licking at her skin. She tasted like the purest clover honey.
He was suddenly shoved away, and he panted for a moment, his heart beating out of his chest as he met her eyes. She wasn’t angry, she looked panicked. “What’s wrong?”
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
C.A.Tibbitts
An Oklahoma native, C.A. Tibbitts resides with her husband.
Writing has always been her passion, and she hopes to continue writing for many years to come in the paranormal romance genre, as well as other romance genres.
She loves to hear from her readers, and deeply appreciates honest reviews.
C.A. Tibbitts Interview
A.K. First and foremost, it is a pleasure to have you here.
So, can you tell us what makes C.A. Tibbitts tick? What got you started on the path to becoming an author?
C.A. Growing up, English and Literature were my favorite subjects in school and college. After I got married (almost 18 years ago!), the internet and instant messaging were getting pretty popular. I created a “fan fic” writing group based on the first television version of La Femme Nikita (Peta Wilson version). It is still active at present!
When I quit my last ‘outside of home’ job (a paralegal for a District Attorney), I decided to write a short story and publish it, just to see if anybody besides me would read it. That short story is Shifted For Love, and it is the first book in my current series Pepper Valley Shifters!
This current book, Shifter Under Cover, uses my ‘sweet spot’ for writing, as it has a lot of elements I use in my writing group. It is my favorite book I’ve written so far!
A.K. What are you currently working on? Would you care to share a snippet?
C.A. Currently working on a short story for another anthology that will publish April 1, 2015. Tentatively titled “Ghost Of A Chance”, here is a small excerpt:
On her way to the front desk, she tried in vain to shift away the strand of hair that kept falling over her left eye. A large shadow fell over the desk. “Hello, and welcome to the…” She finally looked up. Oh, this day just keeps getting better and better! Sarcasm, her dearest friend.
Grant Harrison flashed that hundred-watt grin at her, and though it had been almost fifteen years since she’d last saw him, her panties dampened and her nipples hardened to the point of cutting glass.
“Hi, Ness.”
“What are you doing here?” Harsh, maybe, but he was the one that left. She often daydreamed about what might have been if her high school sweetheart, her first for everything, hadn’t left to play football at the University of Oklahoma. Never mind that he had begged her to come with him. Missouri was her home, and she was content to live her life in the only home she’d ever known.
His smile faltered and a sadness crept into his features. “Momma died last night.”
A.K. Do you include some of your own personal experiences in your books or do you prefer to use your imagination?
C.A. Mostly my imagination, but I admit that a good portion of my female characters are very stubborn and sarcastic (like me).
A.K. What genre do you typically write in and why did you choose this over others?
C.A. I typically write in paranormal romance, though I am beginning to branch out in contemporary. I write the same genres that I read.
A.K. Do you have a specific process or a ritual you go through when sitting down to write?
C.A. Since I am a visual person, I decide on an actor or sports person (someone in the public eye) that my character(s) will look like. I gather several pictures of them into a file for the book, and if stuck, I will look at those or watch interviews and such – and that helps me get going again!
A.K. Where do you find your inspiration for your plots? Do you have any tricks of the trade you would care to share?
C.A. Usually, I am just doing mundane things, where you mind wanders (like doing dishes or cleaning), and I’ll come up with things that I think could be great. The idea grows from there.
I would say you need to figure out what inspires you. Are you a visual person (like me), or do you like to sit down and plot out the entire story, etc. Go with what works best for you and your own style.
A.K. What is the oddest place/situation where an idea for a book/plot has come to you?
C.A. Some of my best plot points have come from my husband’s dreams! He had this awesome dream of a belt that turned into a motorcycle – and I used that for an alien visiting Earth story! He has the craziest dreams! Hey, take inspiration where you find it! ;)
A.K. What makes a book stand out and perk your interest?
C.A. First and foremost, I look at the cover. Then I will read some/all of the blurb to see if it interests me. If I am unsure, I’ll look at some of the reviews.
I have a new book blog, and it has taught me that I like all sorts of things I would never have chosen for myself! It’s okay to venture out of your comfort zones sometimes. You just might like what you find!
A.K. We all have our favorite authors. Can you share some of yours and tell us why you like them?
C.A. Eve Langlais: I love her stories because they are hot, but also tend to be very humorous. I love that!
Laurann Dohner: Her ongoing “New Species” series is my all-time favorite! (I think it’s up to mid-teens in number of books) Always hot, tons of action!
Rebecca Zanetti: So sad to see her vampire “Dark Protectors” series end, but it was also SO satisfying! Super hot, lots of action! I am also not-so-patiently awaiting books from her other series – a super soldier series, and a cowboy series. Both are awesome!
I have so many other favorites, but can’t list all of them here!
A.K. We all have a pet peeve, care to share yours?
C.A. At home, I despise when I am in the zone writing, and I get tons of phone calls! Most tend to be unsolicited sales. Ugh!
A.K. When you’re not writing, what are the things you enjoy doing to relax?
C.A. Watching TV with my husband, social media sites (Facebook addict here!), shopping, swimming in my pool (sadly, only in summer), and most of all – READING! I always am in the middle of reading a book. When finished, I WRITE A REVIEW AND POST EVERYWHERE, then begin another book! J
A.K. Thank you so much for joining me here today. Good luck on all your future books.
My Review of Shifter Undercover
This book was given to me via the author by Lions Book Promotions in exchange for an honest review. Shifter Undercover was a very fun, intriguing, and easy read. I found myself engrossed in the characters so much so, that I’d read it for a couple of hours at a time. That’s a big feat for this gal because I usually wind up stopping myself so I can tend to the family. I just simply couldn’t do that with this book! I really didn’t want to put it down.
Part of the reason why I liked it was because of Forrest. He is such a sweet character! I fell in love with him right from the start of the book! It’s not every day that I come across romance novels written from a male perspective. And, it’s also not every day that I come across an author like C.A. Tibbits. It can be very hard to write from the opposite perspective well, C.A. is a master at it!
I have read a lot of paranormal in my time, but shifters are new to me. I have not read up on a lot of their myths and legends, yet this book was great with detail about this paranormal subset. I enjoyed seeing the shifter’s powers come through as I was reading. It was not hard for me to start to understand what they were capable of at all. And their abilities were very intriguing for me to read about, especially how they marked their lovers. That was one of my favorite parts of the book.
Shifter Undercover is a great book! It is book three, but don’t let that scare you from reading it. It can be read as a stand alone in the series. In fact, this book has peeked my interest to read the other two in the series too! C.A. Tibbits has done a wonderful job. I LOVED this book and rate it 5 stars.
BLURB:
Experimented and tested on by the Nazis, Captain Drake Devilin and his troop of beasts are made into something unholy. Unwilling to serve as a guinea pig for the government any longer, Drake has only one thing on his mind … his beautiful wife, but instead finds himself involved in a war of the supernatural kind. Further pressure mounts when Drake uncovers that a stranger from Sienna’s past is responsible for the rash of supernatural crimes plaguing an enchanted underwater city.
After beating an evil sorcerer at his own game, Sienna Devilin awaits her husband’s return from Germany. Once Drake Devilin arrives, Sienna can tell something is different about the captain. Moody and temperamental, Sienna doesn’t know what to think when he turns down a fight to help with a fresh crop of engineered monsters.
With World War II in full swing, Drake is unable to talk his wife out of their new obligation. Sienna is more determined than ever to fight off demons from her past and monsters in their not too distant future.
EXCERPT:
Light snow fell to the earth. The flakes melted nearly as quickly as they landed. Drake welcomed the fresh air.
Yards from the house he tracked his wife’s scent near the horse’s paddock. Sienna stood under the full moon in front of the big animals that grazed by the fence. He worked his way past the medical tents to join her. Pretty and peaceful, it was no wonder she came to the pasture since dinner had been a complete and utter disaster.
Murphy and Barker joined them for a marvelous evening—along with their wives—for screaming, cursing, and his personal favorite…crying. Murphy’s spouse, Evie, called him every name and then some, while Alex, Barker’s wife, sat in her seat softly sobbing. Somewhere before dessert but after dinner Sienna snuck off.
“Dear wife,” he whispered in her ear before he placed his coat over her shoulders. “I will extend to you my sincerest apologies for not being forthright, but you must promise to never make me sit through anything similar to that again.” Confident he wouldn’t beturned into a toad when she chuckled he pulled her back into his chest.
“They’re worried about their men.”
“I gave them a choice this afternoon.” Drake buried his nose into the careless curls constructed on top of her head. “It is out of my hands,” he murmured, submerging himself in her sweet scent.
“Evie and Alex are not angry at you per se. They’re mad at the amount of loyalty their husbands display toward you and their country.”
“I am not the villain here.” He sighed. “Am I yours?”
Sienna turned in his arms.
Slow drifting snow caught on her long eyelashes, illuminating her beautiful face. Drake captured her lips, and attacked her sweet mouth. Only for a moment, he thought to himself before he released her.
“Why did you stop, Captain? Afraid you’ll lose your mind?” She continued to tempt him with tiny kisses to the underside of his chin. The sum of her powers were too great for one person alone. Extreme anger or sadness could send her into a downward spiral. It had taken Sienna years to learn how to control the balance of her emotions. Otherwise, the sanctity of her sanity would be put into question. Drake remembered all too clearly when she nearly went mad.
“I was falling in love with you,” Sienna replied.
Drake felt that she was wrong and it was the other way around. His raw need for Sienna almost certainly sent her over the edge. Even now, every time he got too close another spark of magic would course through his veins. He couldn’t imagine what a huge wave of her power would do to him.
“Tell me, Captain, are you afraid of the devil in me or is it the devil in you?” Sienna rose on the tips of her toes to kiss the side of his mouth. Weeks had gone by where he didn’t think he would ever see her again. Drake felt the soft palm of her hand caress his face, while she sweetly nipped at his neck. Regardless of his wants or needs, he understood what was at stake for the both of them.
My Review of Sinfully Ever After
I was given a copy of this book by the author through Goddess Fish Promotions in exchange for an honest review.
I really liked this book a great deal and rate it 5 stars. The writer has a way with words because it drew me in right from the start. I normally steer clear of books that contain any plot scenes having to do with war because I sometimes find it hard to understand the terms and what’s going on.
This book, however, is very different. You get a sense of World War II and the war that the paranormal characters are fighting as the human war goes on very clearly. The imagery is by no means obtrusive in any way. It is a very easy read and I found myself engrossed for hours at a time!
I love the plot! It is very intriguing to the reader to find out these creatures are being used in the war. A truly fascinating concept!
I also fell in love with Sienna and Drake. They have such a great chemistry together, but to be honest, my favorite character is Maddie. She’s got a lot of spunk and grit for a female character and you see that beautifully through Percy’s eyes in Chapter Eleven. Their romance is very passionate and having both couples in the story shows such a great dynamic.
I highly recommend this book to any paranormal lover!
